Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium
Chiang Mai residents’ dream of having the sea in their hometown has finally come true. “Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium” has just opened its doors to visitors from near and afar, showcasing thousands of sea and fresh water fish in Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium, which is stretched over the world’s longest acrylic tunnel.
Built on a more than 10-rai plot of land inside Chiang Mai Zoo, the new aquarium is set to become an educational center for ecology and marine life. Walking through a 133-meter acrylic tunnel underneath the 13,895-square-meter aquarium, visitors get an unprecedented view on more than 8,000 fishes of 250 salt and fresh water species from different habitats, such as the Chao Phraya, Mekong and Amazon rivers. Highlights include the “giant Mekong catfish”, sea sharks, and the crowd of colorful “Nemo” or anemone fish so popular with kids. Furthermore, there will be permanent exhibitions on local ecology, mangrove forests and the Mekong River marine environment after which the fresh water display is modeled.
The aquarium is open Mo-Fri 9.00-18.00 and Sa, Sun 9.00-19.00. Regular tickets – including admission to Chiang Mai Zoo - for foreigners are Bt 520 for adults and Bt 390 for children. For more information please call 053-401 144-147, or log-on to http://www.chiangmaiaquarium.com/
